ENERGY TRANSITION: TOWARDS A HOLISTIC STRATEGY

Once again this year, the IESE Energy Industry Meeting is being held with a focus on the energy transition (ET) toward a decarbonized society. Fit for 55, the legislative package of the European Green Deal[1] passed on July 14, 2021, a date loaded with connotations of transformation, has made it necessary for us to take a close look at its content and implications. It certainly represents a necessary, yet daunting challenge.

We need to reflect on social, economic and geopolitical externalities in order to address all their implications. This will help prevent surprises that could slow down the progress of this colossal transformation.

It is therefore critical to include social and governance goals along with environmental goals, as they also form part of the ESG concept. The energy transition must also be based on social and governance criteria or it simply will not work.

In short, we need a holistic strategic framework that addresses social, governance and geopolitical dimensions to successfully achieve an ET within the time periods provided. We’ll discuss these topics at our next Energy Industry Meeting.

[1] 13 chapters, 12 legislative proposals and one forestry strategy.
