After studying history at Cambridge and Oxford, with a focus on financial history, he worked for Lazard Brothers and was part of the asset allocation team at the Boston-based investment firm GMO until 2014.

He is the author of Devil Take the Hindmost: A History of Financial Speculation (1999), highlighted by The New York Times and translated into several languages, and more recently of The Price of Time – The Real Story of Interest (2022), in which he illustrates how extremely low interest rates have fuelled asset price inflation, but have also contributed to weak economic growth, rising inequality, and high levels of debt in our economies.
