Investment strategy specialist and journalist, he was formerly an editor at the financial commentary site Breakingviews, where he is now a columnist, and
contributes to outlets such as The Wall Street Journal, The Financial Times, and The New York Review of Books, where he writes on topics including economic and climate policy.
After studying history at Cambridge and Oxford, with a focus on financial history, he worked for Lazard Brothers and was part of the asset allocation team at the Boston-based investment firm GMO until 2014.
He is the author of Devil Take the Hindmost: A History of Financial Speculation (1999), highlighted by The New York Times and translated into several languages, and more recently of The Price of Time – The Real Story of Interest (2022), in which he illustrates how extremely low interest rates have fuelled asset price inflation, but have also contributed to weak economic growth, rising inequality, and high levels of debt in our economies.
Ponente
Director of the Energy and Climate Programme at the Elcano Royal Institute and Professor of Economic Policy in the Department of Applied Economics at UNED. He holds a PhD in Economics and Business Studies from the Complutense University of Madrid, and has been a visiting researcher at Florida State University and the Autonomous University of Madrid, as well as an associate researcher at the Ortega y Gasset Foundation’s Centre for International Relations.
He regularly lectures on postgraduate programmes at Spanish and international universities, focusing on energy geopolitics and the political economy of North Africa. He has contributed to numerous national and international research projects, including the EU’s Seventh Framework Programme and several Euro-Mediterranean FEMISE projects supported by the European Commission. He has also been awarded the Spanish Economic and Social Council’s research prize.
